Being Crafty

Girls dream of being crafty, and in the mid twenties they have these expendable budgets that they are dying to spend at Papersource.  Being crafty is a dog eat dog world.  One friend "pins" the 10th leather item that she has decided to spray paint gold (I believe this has an official crafty title like gold lame-ing or gold leafing) and suddenly you've decided to stock up on your favorite shade of spray paint.

True story - I recently bought a can of "watermelon" spray paint for every terracotta pot that gets too close to me.  Then I proceeded to complain about how paint tape is over priced.  It's too hard to tape a straight line on a round object.  And now the supplies live under my bed, and my pots still are doodie brown colored and also still don't have basil growing in them.

The competitive spirit that is deep rooted in men's lifelong desire to play or watch competitive sports many nights a week manifests itself in girls' pinterest accounts.  You want to out-craft everyone you know.  Recently, I read a blog post and then a magazine article and then another 5 blog posts, and suddenly my vision was clouded and I couldn't think about anything other than making boozy popsicles.  My popsicles were a roller coaster of flavor - boozy then sour then salty.  Does that sound delicious?  No.  It wasn't.  It was a roller coaster ride that made you think, "When will this end?!"

My roommate is the craftiest of crafty - she hand-makes jewelry, stationary, macaroons, and I'm sure if I asked her to make a straight line on a round object she would have the patience to keep at it until it's perfect.  I am currently looking a gift bags for her sister's "beach-lorette" party that have carefully paired tissue paper fluffing out of them (ah fuscia and white - how pleasing on the eyes) and individually stamped names on each of them.  She reminds me that it doesn't matter that I'm a lady, not everyone is crafty.  Stay humble.

I haven't made candles in my grandmother's china tea cups, but I still have the ability to have kids - so yeah, lady power!
